Do you load up great running songs on your MP3 player? Which are your favorites that really get you going?

And how do you manage the earphone cord? I have an MP3 player that straps on to my arm, and then there's that long cord that goes to the earphones. I've tried running it through my sleeve and inside my shirt, which seems to be better than having it out flapping in the wind, but then if I lose an earphone, I may have to reach down into my shirt to get it. I've tried running it up my back, but that seems awkward, too.

So, How do you manage your music?

(Sorry that it's just me posting, again, DaNae. The deadline to register is May 7th. You can register after this date, but it will cost you more. Also, don't forget to let me know when you have registered and your t-shirt size so I can make you a Highland Road Runners t-shirt. And for you walkers out there, remember you are also invited to do the race. You do not need to run it. Walkers are welcome.................

Also, check out this weeks article and running term. The article is about increasing your speed and I thought it had some good tips.

I would like to thank Robin and Paige for entering blogs - not that we are tired of hearing from you (just kidding), but we would love to hear from the rest of you. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~ Marianne Williamson

Fleet Feet Sports offers a 5K training program

I just found this article in the newspaper advertising a 12 week training program for beginners hoping to run or walk their first 5K race. I am going to go at 7:30 at the golf course down the hill from me. If you want to come just meet me there at 7:30 (okay, so if I know someone else will be there it will help me get my sorry booty out of bed so please come!) I have never really ran the golf course so it will be a new experience for me (i.e. don't expect the first time to be a well thought out plan of where to go--I will be a little like Phoebe on Friends trying to follow Rachel--but to her own drummer arms and legs flapping in the wind--I kind of live that philosophy in general).

Anyway, that is that. I would not be opposed to moving it to 8:00 if people would want to :)
I am hoping to make this a weekly thing (minus Spring Break next week) so come one, come all.

Robin

Want to Run Fast? When my alarm went off, I heard the wind howling and knew it was too early and too cold. What a wimp I am! I hope it was a success, and really, I'll try to make it out for the next one, I promise.

But even though I didn't come and walk with the group, I did get up pound out three miles on the treadmill. And while panting along wishing I was done, I gleaned some wisdom from my mp3 player.

First, while listening to Keith Urban, I heard these lyrics:

Every step I take
I get a little less afraid
Of giving into love
Love, let it out
Believe me when I say
It gets better every day
Once you get used to the pain

I'm thinking that's what exercise is--getting used to the pain. And with every step I take, I get a little less afraid. Wow! That's some pretty deep stuff.

The next song was Maroon 5, and I could really sympathize when I heard:

Is there anyone out there cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe

Does it kill
Does it burn

Yes, it does burn, and it does kill, and I wish I were off of this treadmill, and it IS getting harder and harder to breathe. Thankfully, I was almost done with my 3 miles (Hooray for me! 3 Miles!) and I didn't wax theoretical about any more songs.

Have a question?

Does anyone know where I can get a sports wheelchair?

Important Updates - Please Read

I have a few reminders I wanted to bring to everyone's attention.

1. Don't forget this Saturday, April 5th is our second meeting of the Highland Road Runners. We will be meeting in front of DeEtte's home (11161 N 4800 W) at 7:30am sharp. We will walk/run a course that can be either 2 1/2 miles or a little over 3 miles. I will also provide some healthy snacks, so please come. I will cry if I am the only one there....

2. Utah Valley 5K Race - August 12th. The deadline to register is tomorrow, Thursday April 3rd - after that date you can still register, but for a little more money. I am doing it and would love company. You can visit www.utahvalleymarathon.com if you are interested.

3. Our first official race is coming (yeah!!!). We have 6 weeks from Saturday till the race. Remember, you do not have to run to participate - there will be lots of walkers. There will be all shapes and sizes and ability levels and I promise you will not be the last one to cross the finish line. We also have a sponsor for our race - Concentsus - an online data back-up company (Matt's company) will be providing free shirts for us to wear. So, when you register let me know what size you need. I will add Highland Road Runners to the shirt so we will all match - how cute will we be... You can register at www.runningwithangels.com

See you Saturday..

Another reason to get out and walk

Gas prices got you down? I particularly like the one at Disneyland so you can see that my big and tough Andrew always wasn't' that way - ha ha. The after picture is me crossing the finish line at the Deseret News 10K - on my 40th birthday. What a great day! Also, look to the left for the link about the story of a Utah Principal who lost a lot of weight and became a runner. (Another suggestion from Matt - how cute is he!!)

learning I am not a runner

Hello ladies,

Well, I chickened out after last week's blazing headaches and I tried running today at a later hour--okay, I sound like such a whimp not being able to do it at 6:00 but HELLO! That is freaking early--the sun isn't even up! I went at 8:00 this morning--still early (my husband was in bed when I left) and no headaches!! I really hate running--just being honest. I do like the fact that I am cross-training. You see, I am more of a 'exercise in the comfort of your own home doing Tae Bo or my eliptical' kind of girl--for some reason my body can muster up the strength to do an hour of aerobics or yoga but the thought of running for that long, or even half that amount of time just makes me want to vomit (no, really, ask April--on our last run I got to the church and almost had to). I ran my neighborhood twice--okay, honestly...I walked some, ran most. I am not committing to any race as of yet (or probably ever) but I want to see if adding running in there will allow my butt flab to magically disappear. There is no hope for my stomach, I realize without serious surgery, but maybe there is still hope for me jolly ol' bum.

Okay gals, I really should be working on my homework due at midnight tomorrow but thought I would join the jogging fun.
Robin

Couch to 5K? Is it possible?

Wow, I've been invited to add a post to this Highland Roadrunner's Blog! How exciting! Is there anyone reading this blog, I wonder? Well, I'm checking in, and I know DaNae is posting, so there's at least two.

I'm excited about this little "running group". No, really, I am! I am not currently a jogger or a runner, and I'm hardly even a walker, but I WANT to be. I WANT to be someone who goes out for "a jog". In fact, I'd like to even be able to say I'm going out for "a jog" and not have everyone in the room collapse in uncontrollable laughter (including myself). I want to be someone who can actually jog farther than the distance from my front door to my mailbox. I want to be able to jog for a whole song, or even a whole mile! Those are big goals for me, but you've got to start somewhere.

DaNae is actually quite an inspiration to me. Through diet and exercise, she has lost over 100 pounds! Can you believe it? And she didn't even go on the Biggest Loser to do it. So, anytime I can learn from her or tag along with her, I'm going to do it!

To begin my journey to become a runner, I checked out this "Couch to 5K" plan on Cool Running. It's a little training schedule that tells me how to run and walk and work up a little bit each week, so that by week 10 I can actually be jogging for 10 minutes (EEK!) So, this week, I've done 6 miles on the old treadmill, and I actually started with the plan of warm up for 5 minutes, then jog for 60 seconds, then walk for 90 seconds, and then jog for 60, walk for 90. Quite the workout, I must say. On Saturday my music wasn't working and I couldn't find my MP3 player, so I didn't do the interval training, but I did do a 2 mile walk, so I can still pat myself on the back.

It looks like we've got a 5K coming up in a few weeks at Thanksgiving Point. I won't be done with the "training program" by then, so it may still be a walk for me, but I'm excited to try.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://highlandroadrunners.blogspot.com/2008/03/couch-to-5k-is-it-possible.html' title='Couch to 5K?
